The Simplest Approach to Learning Study Skills

In medicine, doctors will prescribe the minimum effective dose. Meaning, you want to cure the illness but minimize the side effects. Learning is no different. When learning new materials, we want to use the strategies that are most effective, with the least amount of side effects, (time, energy, stress/anxiety).

The most effective and efficient way to study is to use the simplest approach.

Graphic organizers can be good tools to display complex topics. They are beneficial for educators presenting new material.

However, students learning on their own with new material, struggle to identify the most effective graphic organizers to use. Students need a simple set of tools that have broad applications: all grade levels, all subject matters, all knowledge levels.

The most efficient learning method uses a core set of skills across all subject areas. The skills can apply to Chemistry 101, Advanced Microeconomics, or Medieval Literature.   A sixth grader uses the same skill set that a college senior uses.

 SOAR^® Study Skills are versatile enough to be effective at the middle school, the high school, and the university level.
