Start with the time you have. Build as far as your goals take you.
Any intentional time spent teaching students how to learn is better than leaving those skills to chance. SOAR can work within the time you have available — whether that means a few lessons, a quarter, a semester, a full year, or multiple years.
The first exposure is already worthwhile; more time lets you build on it. One year can establish explicit systems for organization, planning, focus, time management, and directing learning. Additional years give students increasingly sophisticated opportunities to apply those same skills to social-emotional learning, communication, standards, career readiness, and real-world work.
A multi-year pathway turns isolated skill instruction into a developmental sequence. Students don’t restart each year with a new set of disconnected strategies. They build on what they already know, apply those skills in more demanding contexts, and take increasing ownership of their learning.
The goal isn’t more curriculum stacked higher — it’s deeper capability. The same brain-first skills become more automatic, more transferable, and more student-directed as students mature.
And you decide how far it goes. SOAR can be shaped around your available time, grade levels, schedule, graduation requirements, intervention needs, ELA goals, career-readiness initiatives, and other priorities.
A pathway you can shape across two to four years
Here is one possible configuration — not a prescribed track. Every multi-year plan can be tailored to your school or district’s goals and schedule, with a SOAR curriculum consultant helping you decide which pieces belong where. The important principle is simple: each stage builds on the skills students developed before it.
Year 1Learning & Soft Skills (or an ELA credit)
Year 1 builds the learning foundation. Students begin with SOAR Learning & Soft Skills, explicitly developing the executive-function and study-skills systems that make increasingly independent learning possible:
- Organization and planning
- Focus and attention
- Time management
- Directing their own learning
With the literature module, this same course can count as an ELA credit rather than sit on top of one. Schools can build foundational learning skills while meeting an academic requirement through the same implementation.
Year 2
Social-Emotional Learning
Year 2 deepens the social-emotional side of self-management. Students build on their learning and executive-function skills with SOAR SEL, strengthening the internal capacities that affect how they manage themselves, relationships, decisions, and challenges:
- Self-awareness
- Emotional regulation
- Teamwork
- Decision-making
The skills are no longer operating only in academic situations. Students begin applying self-awareness, regulation, communication, and decision-making more broadly across school and life.
Years 3 and/or 4
SOAR Higher!
SOAR Higher! moves students into advanced application. Students put their executive-function, learning, and communication skills to work on increasingly authentic and student-directed challenges:
- Deeper organization
- Real-world communication
- Expanded ELA integration
- Genius Hour
- Capstone projects
This is where students begin using the skills for something that matters to them. Instead of merely demonstrating that they know a strategy, they use that strategy to manage longer-term work, communicate with real audiences, pursue interests, and complete increasingly independent projects.
That is one path of many. Some schools use all four years. Some pair two. Others thread selected components through programs they already have. The sequence can be adapted to your objectives rather than forcing your objectives into a fixed sequence.

You don’t have to create a new school structure to build a multi-year pathway
