What Is the SOAR Learning & Soft Skills App?

The SOAR Learning & Soft Skills App strategies you need for achieving success in school…and peace at home.

Group w Caption

I struggled in school, trudging uphill all the way from K-12. When I started college, I was terrified I was going to fail. I discovered a “college survival” class on campus where I learned study skills. I couldn’t remember 3/4ths of the strategies I was learning and had to pare down the others to make them manageable.

But, I miraculously earned a 3.9 GPA that first semester…and it was easier than any of my previous years in school!

Almost immediately, I started tutoring other students in study skills, then became a certified teacher and reading specialist.

Susan w Caption

Today, I have been teaching students how to learn for nearly twenty years. My book, SOAR® Study Skills, is the best-selling study skills book in the world, and has been since 2005. My study skills curriculum is in over 2,000 schools.

But, I didn’t learn I have ADHD until after I had been teaching study skills for 17 years! My diagnosis came while I was desperately trying to get proper support for my son, who has ADHD and dyslexia. ADHD actually explained a lot of things about my life, such as why I walk into stationary objects or spin around the kitchen in circles, taking two hours to cook a “20-minute” meal.

It shook the ground under my feet because I always thought that study skills “fixed my stupid.” Despite my success in college, I was frustrated that I couldn’t figure out how to use more of the strategies I learned from that College Survival course. The shortcuts I was taking as I pared down the rest that I *could* use made me feel like I was “cheating.”

Now, I understand that study skills helped me navigate around my ADHD…and that ADHD was like a savant gift for simplicity! I didn’t understand it at the time, but now that I understand the biology of ADHD, I know why simplicity is so essential.

"Is This Success Possible for My Child?"

The ADHD Circuit®, a model I developed for understanding the biology of ADHD, illustrates why simplicity is critical for students with ADHD. It also demonstrates exactly why and how it is possible for your child to achieve this success, too.

ADHD originates in the frontal cortex of the brain. The frontal cortex processes and organizes all incoming information from our five senses and feelings, then determines how we will respond to that information

img5

The frontal cortex communicates with the rest of the brain through electrical wires called neurons. Although we have billions of them forming an extremely elaborate network of connections in our brains, any one of those neuron connections is really just like this circuit…

img6

This string of lights is a simple model for the neuron connections in our brain. This first bulb here is the frontal cortex. It makes decisions, and then sends signals to the rest of the brain.

img7

In an ADHD brain, the frontal cortex experiences power outages. ADHD is caused by a shortage of brain chemicals in the frontal cortex (including norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin). With these chemicals in short supply, the frontal cortex sends weak signals to the rest of your brain. Sometimes, the signals connect. But, many signals never reach their destination in the brain…and, the power goes out!

An ADHD brain does best when it can processes information with fewer neuron connections. Fewer connections mean three things for the ADHD brain:

  1. The brain needs less power to successfully complete a task.
  2. The brain has fewer chances of losing a connection.
  3. The brain is better able to “hard-wire” simple strategies, covering these neuron pathways with a coat of myelin to create a “habit.”

Compare the traditional method for putting a homework assignment away, while in class, to the SOAR® Binder System. With the traditional method of having separate folders and notebooks, a student who receives a paper in class and wants to put it away will have to: grab the paper, set the paper on the desk, reach down, open the book bag, move books out of the way, flip through the folders, find the right folder, grab the folder needed, pull it out, set it on the desk, open the folder, slide the paper in, close the folder, pick it back up, reach down, grab the book bag, open the bag, move books out of the way, hold other folders back, slide folder in, set the bag down, and return to an upright position. – That’s 22 connections on the brain circuit!

With the SOAR® Binder System, students simply need to: grab the paper, open their binder, flip to the subject folder, slide the paper in, and close the binder. – That’s only 5 connections on the brain circuit!

img8

The SOAR® system is 77% less strain on your mental bandwidth, making YOU 77% more effective and efficient! In a similar fashion, the SOAR® planner system reduces brain strain by 72%…making you 72% more efficient and effective at managing time and responsibilities.

And, with our system for reading textbooks, our students report that their reading time is cut in half, while their comprehension *more* than doubles!

The SOAR® Learning & Soft Skills App Is an Investment in Your Child’s Future!

The Spiral of Success expands well beyond this school year; it will propel students into img13college and the workplace. One mom told me, “My son failed most of his college classes for almost four years before we discovered study skills. After that, he became a straight-A student, sailed through school, and is now a very successful entrepreneur! I wish I had known he needed study skills along…a couple hundred dollars in high school would have saved me tens of thousands of wasted tuition money!”

After giving a live presentation, parents often ask me, “Can you come to my office? We could use these strategies, too!” They are right! I continue to use study skills every day as I manage my household and run my own company.

Study Skills Make Students 6x More Successful!

img14Formal studies support the importance of study skills. A 2009 study published by Ohio State University tracked hundreds of incoming freshman. Students who had been identified as “struggling” in high school and took a study skills class as they began college, were 600% more likely to graduate than their peers who did not take a study skills class!

Of course, this is great news, but if those students had learned study skills earlier, they never would have been struggling in the first place!

A 2008 survey of employers, all from fields expected to grow in the next thirty years, revealed that 95% of their “most needed” skills…were study skills.

img15The Stanford Research Institute and Carnegie Melon Foundation interviewed 500 CEOs and concluded that 75% of a person’s career success is determined by their “soft skills,” which is the business world’s term for study skills. Only 25% of a person’s career success is determined by their “technical knowledge.”

“Yeah, But How Do I Get My Kid to Do This?”

This question is, by far, the number one question I hear from parents. I have a very good answer for this…

I’ve been dealing with the issue of motivation since my I met my first tutoring client nearly twenty years ago; he didn’t want to be there!Nor have 80% of the students in my study skills classes ever since. So, I always open my classes by asking them, point blank…

“How many of you are here because someone else, such as a parent, has made you come to this class?”

Of course, 80% of the hands will go up. (A few of the remaining 20% shoot their hands up at the last second, realizing they probably shouldn’t admit that they want to be there.)

So, I nod my head in acceptance and explain that I fully understand… “I get it. I know you are already tired of doing homework. You are tired of sludging through school, and perhaps fighting with your parents over schoolwork. The last thing you want to do is sit here with me for a few hours and listen to me shove more work down your throat.

The good news is, that’s not what I want for you, either. I want you to be successful in school, but I want you to do that with lots of free-time left over. I want you to earn better grades…in less time! I will show you how to make schoolwork easier. Much easier!

No one has ever taught you how to learn or get organized. Just like you use strategies in sports, video games, and to get what you want from your parents, I am going to show you strategies for managing homework and studying faster, with better results!”

By this time, nearly all of the students are sitting up, leaning forward, and listening intently. I have spoken their language and they are beginning to trust me. This honesty is what your child will need from you.

If you think about it, our children are no different from us. They don’t like when something is “shoved down their throat,” just as we wouldn’t like it if our boss came to us and said, “I don’t like the way you organize your desk, so THIS is how you are going to do it!” as he slams a new whiz-bang program in front of you.

Even if you had been thinking that your desk could be better organized; you will still appreciate a little more respect. A friendly introduction to the notion would be helpful. So, approach your child the same way you want a “boss” to approach you.

Motivation will come from three simple things:

  1. Sincere acknowledgement of their feelings.
  2. Emphasis on “Better grades in less time!” Tell her that you know she needs time for “fun stuff” in order to have motivation for school. Share the video above so she can learn about The ADHD Circuit® and see how this system is geared towards success through simplification…not complication.
  3. Celebrate your child’s strengths! Students with ADHD are so used to struggling and hearing what they can’t do, that they need a lot of positive input; they need a good, healthy, regular dose of joy in their life. Priscilla Vail, author of Smart Kids with School Problems, says that emotions are the on/off switch to learning. Celebrating strengths is so important; one entire section of the SOAR® Learning & Soft Skills App is devoted to helping your child discover his strengths.

By Design, SOAR® Is Student-Friendly

I’ve already demonstrated how SOAR® is focused on sophisticated simplicity! Since I learned these strategies as a student and used them to get through all of college and graduate school, I have remained acutely aware of what it takes to be student-friendly.

Therefore, all strategies and supplies included in SOAR® must pass through these three “student-friendly” filters:

  1. Strategies must be effective. Obviously.
  2. Strategies must be very efficient. Uber-efficient.
  3. Strategies must apply across content areas. This prevents students from getting confused about *when* to use strategy.

SOAR® Is a Trusted Resource

img16I have a track record of nearly twenty years of success as a study skills teacher. My book, SOAR® Study Skills, has been the best-selling study skills book in the world since 2005, over 2,000 schools have adopted my study skills curriculum, and my program is endorsed by the leading expert in ADHD, Dr. Ned Hallowell!

“Susan Kruger is an absolute genius. She’s made getting organized simple, which is the only way kids will stick with it, and she’s made it fun, which is a minor miracle. She’s tremendously innovative, creative, and wise. I can’t wait for the world to discover this amazing woman and all she has to offer!”

~ Ned Hallowell, M.D., Ed.D.

I Personally Guarantee Results!

If you purchase the program and do not feel that it was valuable for you or your family, simply return the supplies for a full refund.

I am a busy parent and know how it feels when your child is struggling and you are stressed out…at your wits’ end! But, I have put myself to the test! As my son has grown and his homework demands have gradually changed, I occasionally found myself facing common struggles that I recognize from years of conversations with my clients. (The same challenges my mom had with me as a child!)

When this happens, I consciously take a step back and ask myself, “What do I ask others to do that I am NOT doing, myself?”As soon as I analyze our situation from that perspective (instead of the heat of the moment), I can resolve our problem. My ADHD Success Scorecard will help you do this analysis for yourself.
