A new roundup of children enter kindergarten curious and excited about elementary school! You watch as your prior year students’ move up to the next grade level, proud of their responsibilities as the “bigger” kids. Parent involvement is high.

Student enthusiasm and engagement is self-guided. Milestones and accomplishments are celebrated. Students’ confidence soars – growth and ownership for their learning emerges. Light bulbs are going off! You’re doing what you set out to do as promising new educator…change LIVES!

Right?! Or maybe…

Elementary school is supposed to be all “rainbows and unicorns,” right?

You’re overwhelmed and feel you have to manage everything for your students. Perhaps you have a bunch of disorganized learners, or a community of unengaged parents.  State-mandated expectations don’t easily match your students’ developmental abilities. It’s called the 80/20 Rule. 80/20 states that roughly 20% of our actions produce 80% of our results, or 80% of effects comes from 20% of causes.

We see examples of 80/20 in every part of the world and our lives:

• 80% of the clothes you own are only worn 20% of the time.  Conversely, you wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time!
• 80% of crimes are committed by 20% of criminals.
• In the classroom, 20% of your students demand 80% of your time and energy.

This means that in a six-hour day with 30 students, you spend over 4.75 hours on just six students!  It’s no wonder you’re exhausted and frustrated!
