More Ways to Take Notes & Study Vocabulary Words

Through our SOAR® Study Skills book we describe a simple and efficient system for taking notes in class and studying those notes outside of class. There are, however, some additional note-taking formats, such as concept webs (great for learning science or math vocabulary) and graphic organizers. Below you will find a description of concept webs and graphic organizers, as well as some resources to help you get started using either method.

Concept Webs

A concept web is a type of diagram that shows relationships between concepts. Concept webs are perfectly suited for learning vocabulary words. Concept maps are excellent tools for students of all ages, from pre-primary to med school!

A format most ideal for developing general vocabulary and literary comprehension can be found here: click here.

A format for learning technical vocabulary, such as in science or math, is illustrated in this video, below:

Graphic Organizers

Graphic organizers are a visual representations of the material a student is learning. The organizer assists the student in brainstorming and/or organizing information to make it easier to understand how concepts connect to one another.
