The Matrix of Study Skills; What if Neo Chose the Blue One?

In the movie, The Matrix, there’s a famous scene where Morpheus offers Neo a choice… Red Pill or Blue Pill. If Neo takes the blue pill, it would allow him to remain in his made-up reality of the Matrix and continue living in ignorance. If Neo takes the red pill, he escapes the Matrix and enters the real world to live in reality. —–

The choice is yours… take the “Blue Pill” and go back to work, take the “Red Pill” and help us make education relevant again!

—– The Matrix is the world that Neo lives in, breathes in, and sees. But in reality, it’s just a shadow being cast against the wall, much like Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave.” The similarities between the world of the Matrix and education are one in the same.

As an educator, you, like Neo, have a choice. Will it be the “Red Pill” or “Blue Pill?” You can take the proverbial “Red Pill” and acknowledge that today’s learners need a different set of tools than the learners of yester-year. Like everything else in life, things need to evolve out of the old and into the new. We need to keep what works and shed what doesn’t to create the 21st Century Learner.

We are not trying to reinvent the wheel here. We don’t need to. We just have to make a few adjustments. Or, you can take the “Blue Pill” and deny the fact that students need a whole new set of skills to succeed in education and the 21st Century workplace. You can tell yourself that the current approach to education in the United States (that focuses entirely on content, not “learning skills”) has worked for the past 100 years and will work for the next 100 years.

You wouldn’t throw a child into a pool before teaching them how to swim. So let’s stop throwing our kids into education without teaching HOW TO LEARN. We must give students this foundation of learning skills before throwing them into the real world. Isn’t that the whole point of education, to prepare the students for the real world?

Teach your students learning and soft skills and unlock their potential to be self-directed and motivated learners, that are equipped to organize the mass amounts of available data, handle today’s complex problems, and be prepared for the 21st century workplace.

Like Neo, empowering students with these skills opens a whole new world for them and it means less work and stress for you!

When students know how to organize and learn their performance goes up, while your workload goes down. But again, the choice is yours. If you do decide to take the “Red Pill,” SOAR will be here to support you every step of the way.
